Wasps are beneficial pollinators but become aggressive when nests are disturbed. Yellowjackets are particularly aggressive in late summer and fall when colony numbers peak and food becomes scarce. Ground-nesting yellowjackets are often encountered unexpectedly during yard work.
Seasonal Activity
Active from late spring through early fall. Colonies die off in winter except for fertilized queens, which overwinter and start new colonies in the spring. Nest removal is best handled in early morning or evening when wasps are less active.

Overhangs, attic vents, wall voids, and ground cavities near structures are common nest sites. Older homes with gaps in siding or soffits provide accessible nesting locations.

Behavior Patterns
Subterranean termites live in colonies in the soil and travel through mud tubes to access wood above ground. They feed on cellulose in wood and can work undetected for long periods. Unlike carpenter ants, termites actually consume the wood, which compromises its structural integrity.
Seasonal Activity
Termite swarmers typically emerge in spring on warm days after rain, often mistaken for flying ants. Feeding activity continues year-round as long as termites can maintain access to moisture and wood.
Structural Vulnerabilities
Wood-to-ground contact, moisture around the foundation, and cracks in concrete provide entry. Older homes with unfinished basements and crawlspaces are at higher risk. Firewood and mulch stored against the foundation also create conducive conditions.
